The Magician – Card 1

If you have been following my Chaos Pen Challenges over on my sister’s blog the Writing Hallow, then you are familiar with the artwork and artist of this card on DeviantArt. And yes, you can still purchase this amazing Tarot deck from this online store.

Today we’re featuring and exploring the second card in the Major Arcana, The Magician.

So take a look at these three cards and compare them to the first one I presented. How are they the same? How are they different? What do they say to you?

Take your time. Let them “speak” to your soul and mind.

Feel free to click on each one to visit their page on DeviantArt to see a larger image and read what the artist had to say about it.

Themes of the Card

The Magician is Card 1 in the Major Arcana and the first of a pair of cards in the Fool’s Journey. To have a greater understanding of the pairing between the Magician and the High Priestess, one could look to the concept of yin-yang. In this philosophy the Magician embodies the yang.

According to the Learning the Tarot website, the keywords associated with the card are:

What This Card Means to Me

This is the active pure potential within us all. It’s the talents and skills we already have at hand, we just need to make use of them. For a lack of a better term, it’s where we pull the rabbit out of our ass and make shit happen.

Parents really know what this is: it’s the rally. Every. Day. We pull it together to make it happen even when by all rights it shouldn’t, can’t, or don’t want to happen. We just get it done come hell or high water.

You had a hard day at work, you just got home moments before the kids do, and your youngest kid just now somehow blew up that bag of mini chocolate chips all over the kitchen (how the fuck did you get the chocolate chips just now?). Your oldest kid suddenly can’t find their eye glasses and they NEED them right now (didn’t you just have them when you walked in the door?). Your middle child is starving to death (yeah, okay kid) and howling on the floor (seriously, you’re going to do this right now?). What you really want to do is crawl under the couch and die (or drink several bottles of the hard stuff), but you don’t. You rally. You somehow find the glasses, feed the howling kid, and get the kitchen cleaned up all while getting dinner started – without murdering your children (but you at least think about grabbing the hard stuff).

If that’s not harnessing the essence of the Magician right there, then I’ve got nothing. But to all you parents out there: I stand with you, I see you, and I know you for the magic you perform daily. Own it, rock it, and be proud!

The Music Playlist

In the spirit of all this, these are the songs picked out thus far for this card.

The Writing Prompt

Now as a writer with everything we’ve gone over with this card what comes to mind? Start writing! Doesn’t matter what it is. Stretch your mind and let The Magician speak to you.

I would love it if you linked or pinged back what you wrote so I could see where you went with this.

Happy writing!
